Traditional media is suffering in the current downturn/recession. For example, US print newspaper revenues were down 16 percent in the second quarter, compared with a year ago. Online (and Outdoor) are really the only media segments that are growing or holding their own (maybe TV). However, the Wall Street Journal reported yesterday about a divergence between paid search and online display advertising and the relative fortunes of the companies that rely on each for their revenues. The webmaster told me, gently, as if speaking the obvious to a child, that "You don't understand man. You're talkin' about law. This is the internet. The law doesn't apply to the internet". Yesterday I reported based on a MarketingWeek Online story that Microsoft was running a promotion to give away a free month of search ads. Microsoft told me the story was wrong and promised to send me more information. I now have that information, so let me share with you the program. UK advertisers will soon be incentivized to migrate their Google AdWords campaigns to adCenter campaigns. The program consists of a three level promotion, a bronze segment, a silver segment and a gold segment. read more »

The free ads can be placed on "any online Microsoft Live service including Messenger, Hotmail and the MSN search engine," said MarketingWeek. I proudly admit to having done this on countless occasions when someone asks me to look at their site and give my "expert opinion." It's very easy to take a look at the code for a few seconds, spout off about 10 things that haven't been done on the site, impress the potential client with my knowledge of alt tags, esoteric ranking methodologies or meta tag knowledge and then ride off in the sunset.
